Changes in spontaneous single unit activity after application of blood serum from patients with schizophrenia

Abstract

Spontaneous single unit activity following application of blood serum from schizophrenic patients and normal subjects was studied on neurons of isolated nerve ganglia ofHelix pomatia by a microelectrode technique. Application of blood serum from schizophrenic patients inhibits unit activity; it is not altered by blood serum of healthy subjects. In descending order of biological action of their blood serum, patients with different forms of schizophrenia can be arranged as follows: progressive, indolent, active intermittent and intermittent in remission.
