An investigation was made of the alkylation of m- and p-cresols with 1,3-butanediol in presence of zinc chloride (20% on alumina) or phosphoric acid.

The products of the alkylation of m- and p-cresols with 1,3-butanediol were mainly the isomeric butenylcresols and products of their cyclization, identical with the corresponding products of the alkylation of cresols with 3-buten-1-ol.

The total yields of individual products in the alkylation of m- and p-cresols at 250° in presence of ZnCl2 onalumina were 74.0% and 69.2% respectively. In all cases 14.8–35.3% of polymeric substances was formed; the compositions and structures of these have not yet been established.
