Summary

In this paper several physically motivated assumptions concerning the tangent modulus of one-dimensional stress-strain curves in plasticity are generalized to three dimensions. General restrictions on the choice of functions present in the constitutive relations of plasticity are derived. A simple case in which yield surface contraction occurs is treated. Also, some acceptable yield functions are determined for a simple case of nonlinear kinematic hardening.
