Summary
-
1.
The dipole moments of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene, 2, 4, 9-trinitro-m-xylene, and styphnic acid were measured.
-
2.
The high values found for trinitrotoluene and trinitro-m-xylene are to be explained by the influence of the nitro groups.
-
3.
It was shown that in these cases it is essential to take atom polarization into account.
