Summary
-
1.
An investigation was made of the effect of pyridine on the rate and selectivity of the hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene and cyclopentadiene in presence of Raney nickel and platinum black.
-
2.
It was found that, over Raney nickel in presence of pyridine, selective hydrogenation occurs: diphenylacetylene to stilbene and cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene.
This specificity of the poisoned catalyst may be used for the purpose of purifying industrial olefin fractions from diene and acetylene hydrocarbons, and also for the purpose of determining the contents of the latter in ethylenic hydrocarbons.
-
3.
Unlike Raney nickel, platinum black promotes the hydrogenation of both double bonds of cyclopentadiene in presence of pyridine.
