Summary

  1. 1.

An experimental procedure was developed and was applied to the study of the effect of the chemical state of the surface of an active carbon— as determined by chemical adsorption or chemisorption of oxygenon adsorption isotherms for water vapor.

  2. 2.

it was shown that the formation of surface oxides has a very substantial effect, particularly on the adsorption region of the isotherm.

  3. 3.

The question of the nature of the primary adsorption centers on the surface of active carbons was discussed on the basis of the experimental results. It was shown that the chemical adsorption of one molecule of oxygen results in the formation of approximately one primary adsorption center.
