Summary
Here we consider the growth and decay of onedimensional acceleration waves, as second-order singular surfaces, propagating in a mixture of chemically reacting elastic materials. Many such materials are granular and, or, slightly porous and these properties have a significant influence on the chemical kinetics of the mixture. This is accounted for by a constitutive dependence on higher-order gradients of the deformation and entropy. Following the derivation of a general nonlinear differential equation which governs the wave amplitude, we consider the specific example of a compressive (expansive) wave entering a homogeneous region in strong thermochemical equilibrium and inducing an exothermic (endothermic) reaction. Central to the amplitude behavior is a function, called the thermochemical energy curve, which determines the rate of thermochemical energy released, or absorbed, by the induced reaction.
