On stable numerical integration methods of maximum time step

Summary

Two new three step formulae are introduced for the numerical integration of a first order ordinary differential equation. One is implicit and the second explicit. Each is optimal in the sense of permitting the maximum time steps under which the numerical integration formula is numerically stable when applied to a standard reference equation. For example, the maximum admissible time steps in the optimal methods are several times greater than those of the Adams-Bashforth explicit and Adams-Moulton implicit methods.

Zusammenfassung

Zwei neue Dreischrittformeln werden für die numerische Integration einer gewöhnlichen Differential-gleichung erster Ordnung vorgestellt. Eine ist implizit und die andere explizit. Jede ist optimal in dem Sinn, daß sie die maximalen Zeitschritte erlaubt, bei welchen die numerische Integrationsformel numerisch stabil ist, wenn sie auf eine standardisierte Bezugsgleichung angewendet wird. So ist zum Beispiel die Höchstzahl der zugelassenen Zeitschritte in den optimalen Methoden einige Male größer als die der expliziten Adams-Bashforth-und der impliziten Adams-Moulton-Methoden.
