Summary

This paper is concerned with minimum weight design of solid continuous beams for a given deflection, under the application of harmonically varying dynamic loads. The formulation is carried out based on the stationary mutual potential energy principle. An iterative numerical solution procedure is presented using the method of finite differences. The formulation and the solution procedure are generally applicable. An illustrative example is considered and numerical results are presented and discussed.
