Summary

  1. 1

An investigation has been made into the reduction of 1-phenylpyrrole by means of zinc dust and hydrochloric acid at 60–75* and by means of zinc dust in conjunction with hydrochloric and acetic acids at 40–50* and at 50–65*.

  2. 2.

It has been found that, when 1-phenylpyrrole is reduced under the conditions used in this work, it unites with four atoms of hydrogen with formation of 1-phenykpyrrolidine and N-2-butenylaniline.

  3. 3.

An explanation has been proposed for the mechanism of the reduction of 1-phenylpyrrole involving the intermediate formation of 1-phenyl-2-pyrroline.
