The thermocatalytic conversion of pentane at 450–460° and about 300 atm, has been investigated.

It has been shown that pentane, in absence of catalysts, undergoes a number of reactions, forming gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. The composition of the mixture of hydrocarbons formed gives evidence of the occurrence of the reactions of destructive alkylation, cyclization, cracking, and polymerization.

It has been established that the use of certain oxide catalysts does not lead to a lowering of the reaction temperature, but affects the composition of the mixture of hydrocarbons formed; this is distinguished by the presence of a larger amount of branched hydrocarbons, and also of cycloalkanes, including cyclopentane hydrocarbons.
