Relationship between the activity and fine crystalline structure of raney nickel catalyst

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

Harmonic analysis was carried out on profiles of x-ray interference lines of specimens of Raney nickel catalyst — untreated, heat-treated, and chemically treated to remove hydrogen. It was shown that the diffuseness of the x-ray interference lines of Raney nickel catalysts is due to the small size of the crystals (blocks of coherent scattering of x-rays).

  2. 2.

It was shown that there is a relationship between the change produced by heat in the size of the crystals of Raney nickel and the change in catalytic activity. When Raney nickel is heat-treated at temperatures as high as 570°, the dispersity and activity of the catalyst still remains fairly high.

  3. 3.

A scheme for the distribution of hydrogen in Raney nickel is proposed.
