Macromolecular compounds communication 61. Decarboxylation of dicarboxylic acids during polycondensation

Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

A study has been made of the effect of temperature on the polycondensation of ethylene glycol with oxalic, malonic, succinic, adipic, and sebacic acids.

  2. 2.

It has been found that in presence of ethylene glycol the process of decarboxylation is greatly accelerated, and as a result no polyester is formed at ail in the case of oxalic and malonic acids, and in the case of succinic and adipic acids the molecular weight of the resulting polyester falls as the reaction temperature rims.

  3. 3.

It has been found that in presence of glycols the decarboxylation temperatures of dicarboxylic acids are greatly lowered.

  4. 4.

It has been established that the evolution of carbon dioxide results from the breakdown of the terminal carboxyl groups of the polyester molecule.

  5. 5.

It has been shown that the breakdown of terminal carboxyl groups hinders the normal course of the polycondensation and leads to the formation of polyesters of lower molecular weight.
