Summary
-
1.
The part played by stereochemical factors in polymerization processes has been examined, and it has been shown that they may play an important part, not only in the first stages of the reaction, which determine the existence or nonexistence of polymerizability, but also in the succeeding stages of the process.
-
2.
It has been shown that in the polymerization process stereochemical factors can cause the chain to be terminated at the dimer stage; this is a consequence of the great strains that may arise in the molecule on account of the presence of bulky substituents.
-
3.
It has been shown that stereochernical factors play an important part, together with polar effects, in determining the directions in which the monomer molecules unite when forming the polymer chain, the directions being determined by the magnitudes of the steric hindrance effects operating, for the two different ways of building up the macromolecule.
