Communication 77. Dependence of the properties of aliphatic polyamides having “even” repeating units on the structure of the repeating unit

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

The dependence of the melting point of an alip hatic polyamide or the relative numbers of amide and methylene groups in the repeating unit is examined.

  2. 2.

It is shown that as the amide-methylene ratio of an aliphatic polyamide increases, there is a proportional increase in the melting point.

  3. 3.

An equation is proposed which describes the dependence of the melting point of aliphatic polyamides on the amide-methylene- ratio.

  4. 4.

It is shown that the melting point of an aliphatic polyamide does not depend on the distribution of methylene and amide groups within the repeating unit, but only on the relative numbers of these groups.

  5. 5.

The results are Interpreted on the basis of the view that hydrogen bonding occurs between amide groupings.

  6. 6.

It is shown that in mixed polaymides not all of the amide groupings are able to form hydrogen bonds.

  7. 7.

It is suggested that aliphatic polyamides may be regarded as copolymers of ethylene and isocyanic acid.
