Abstract
Alkyl isothiocyanates and isocyanates react with 2-aminopyrrolines in general to form 1-carbamoyl-2-iminopyrrolidines, which rearrange to the corresponding 2-carbamoyliminopyrrolidines (2-ureido-1-pyrrolines) when heated to 80° in an inert solvent (Table 2).
Direct substitution at the 2-imino nitrogen at 20° predominates with aryl isothiocyanates, aryl isocyanates and methoxymethyl isocyanate. Sterically hindered reactants also yield 2-imino substitution products directly.
1-Thiocarbamoyl and carbamoyl derivatives are also obtainable from 3-cyanopropyl isothiocyanates and isocyanates by cycloaddition with amines (Scheme 1).
While a controlled cleavage of H2S from the 2-thiocarbamoylimino derivatives (Tables 2, 3) is not possible, the 1-thiocarbamoyl derivatives (Table 1) afford 3-cyanopropyl carbodiimides with loss of H2S and ring opening (Scheme 1).
