A contribution to the crystal structures of the iridium borides

Abstract

A reinvestigation of the binary system iridium-boron1 (1200° C, quenched) confirms the existence of IrB1.35 2, IrB1.1 3 as well as of a boride with the approximate formula IrB0.9 4. The crystal structure of this boride has been determined by means of single crystal photographs. At temperatures above 1200° C a high temperature modification having WC-type structure has been detected. No further borides have been observed within the temperature region of 1000 to 1200° C.

Zusammenfassung

Bei einer erneuten Untersuchung des Systems: Ir−B1 (1200° C, abgeschreckt) wird die Existenz der bereits bekannten Kristallarten IrB1.35 2 (eigener Typ), IrB1.1 3 (Defekt-α-ThSi2-Typ) sowie eines Borides der ungefähren Zusammensetzung IrB0.9 4 bestätigt. Die Kristallstruktur dieses Borids wird an Hand von Einkristallaufnahmen ermittelt. Oberhalb ∼1200° C wird eine Hochtemperaturform mit WC-Typ aufgefunden. Im Temperaturbereich von 1000° C bis 1200° C treten keine weiteren Boride auf.
