Summary
-
1.
A study has been made of the reactions of the sulfides of phosphorus P4S7, P4S6 and P4S8 wit alcohols.
-
2.
Three types of products are obtained from P4S7 and ethanol, propanol or butanol, viz., (RO)2PSH, (RO)2PSSH, and (RO)2(RS)PS.
-
3.
THe sulfide P4S7 and methanol give them esters (CH3O)2PSH and (CH3O)2(CH3S)PS.
-
4.
The sulfide P4S6 reacts with alcohols to give esters of the types (RO)2PSH and (RO)2(RS)PS. Only with isopropabol does this sulfide give the esters (iso-C3H7O)2PSH and (iso-C3H7O)2PSSH.
-
5.
The same products are obtained from the sulfide P4S5, or the 1:1 atomic sulfur-[hosphorus melt, and alcohols as with the sulfide P4S5, but the yields are lower.
-
6.
The dialkyl dithiophosphates (RO)2PSSH have for the first time been prepared pure; they are liquids, which can be distilled in vacuum.
