    Conditions for synthesis of dialkylacetals have been elucidated.

    Their tendency towards disproportionation with further transformations has been demonstrated.

    Of the 6 compounds synthesized 5 have not previously been prepared or described.

    A mechanism explaining the transformations is presented.
