Deposits on VK-50 fuel elements

Soviet Atomic Energy Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Nuclear electric power generating stations based around a VK-50 reactor differ from other power stations based around boiling-water reactors in the typically high content of copper and zinc compounds in the deposits, on account of the brass used in the turbine condenser and in the low-pressure heater on stream in the primary loop.

  2. 2.

The principal component of the deposits on the fuel element, responsible for ∼90% of the longlived isotope, is the isotope Zn65.

  3. 3.

Despite the very limited dimensions of the stainless steel surfaces, some Co60 was nevertheless detected in the deposits.
