Material for molten aluminum alloy feeding devices

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A material based on silicon nitride and silicon carbide has been formulated for stopper units used incontinuous aluminum-tin alloy casting installations. Methods have been developed for the thermoplastic slip casting of stopper rods and cold pressing of feeding nozzles. The castings and compacts produced are sintered in a high-temperature resistance furnace provided with a nitrogen atmosphere.

  2. 2.

A new design of stopper unit is proposed in which the stopper acts not only as an element controlling the flow of molten metal but also as a protective thermocouple sheath.

  3. 3.

Stopper units of the new design have been tested and adopted at the Zavolzhe Motor Factory and the Tambov Journal Bearing Factory.
