Abstract
The solvolysis of the [Cr(NCS)4(p-toluidine)2]− complex ion was studied in various ethanol—water mixtures. Experimental results can be explained by assuming two parallel processes. Substitution of the first thiocyanato group is a first order reaction with regard to the initial complex ion having an activation energy of about 31–32 kcal/mole and an activation entropy of about 20 Cl. The rate of this reaction is practically not influenced by the solvent composition. Substitution of the p-toluidine molecules appears to be a second order reaction (first order with regard to the complex ion as well as to ethanol). It has an activation energy of about 23–24 kcal/mole and nearly zero activation entropy. Substitution of thiocyanato ions shows practically no dependence on the hydrogen ion concentration. Substitution of p-toluidine, however, is faster in the presence of mineral acids.
