Abstract
The formation of sodium and potassium cyanate by reaction of activated hydrogen peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and 2-propylidene hydroxyhydroperoxide on sodium and potassium cyanide in redox-inert solvents has been investigated. The mechanism of these oxidation reactions is discussed. In the reaction of an alcoholic solution of sodium or potassium cyanide with activated H2O2, i.e. in the presence of acetonitrile, high yields of pure crystalline alkali cyanates are obtained. This procedure is therefore a very convenient method in synthesizing pure alkali metal cyanates.
