Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The product of the oxidation of 5,5,10,10-tetramethyl-4b,5,9b,10-tetrahydroindeno[2,1-a]indene (I) with m.p. 174°, C20H20O2, is 1,2¬5,6-dibenzo-3,3,7,7-tetramethylcyclooctane-4,8-dione (III).

  2. 2.

    On the basis of its method of preparation, elementary analysis, and spectroscopic data, the product of the oxidation of compound (I) with m.p. 203–204° has the structural formula (IV).
