Conclusions

In light, hexafluoroacetone benzoylimine oxidizes dimethyIbenzylamine into the corresponding aminocarbene, which adds to benzoylimine to form 2-phenyl-4,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)-5-N-methylbenzylamino-2-oxazoline.

In polar media 2-phenyl-4,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2-oxazoline is present in an equilibrium with an open aldehyde form.
