Summary

  1. 1.

In the action of ethyl magnesium bromide on 1,1,1,5-tetrachloropentane, reduction of the trichloromethyl group takes place leading to formation of 1,1,5-trichloropentane, ethylene, and 1,5,5,6,6,10-hexachlorodecane.

  2. 2.

Reduction of the trichloromethyl group to the dichloromethyl one occurs at the expense of the hydrogen atom in the β position of the organic magnesium compound.
