Conversion of solar radiation into that of an Xe+Cs laser

Journal of Soviet Laser Research Aims and scope

Abstract

The possibilities are considered of amplifying light in a mixture by solar pumping. It is proposed to use as a working transition Cs(72P1/2)→Cs(52Ds/2), λ = 13,800 Å. The analysis shows that amplification is possible if the cross section for the collisional deexcitation of Cs(6P) is sufficiently high. In this case it is possible to produce converters of solar energy into laser radiation with an efficiency ≅ 0.6%. At a 25-fold concentration of the solar energy in an active medium with dimensions 0.45 x 15 m, the laser-radiation power can reach 1 kW.
