Summary
A further study has been made of the copper aluminium system and additional phases have been noted. They all fit in with the monotonic sequence, E/A=(2n−1)/n, where n is an integer. E/A is the ratio of electrons to atoms.
These structures may be derived either from the double body-centred cube or from the Gamma structure. The omission of certain atoms and their replacement by electrons is strong evidence for the existence of an electron lattice. The special distribution of Cu and Al atoms turns largely on the size factor, but the electronic distribution is of over-riding importance.
