Summary

  1. 1.

The cytochrome c — cytochrome oxidase system in molluscan neurons is located in narrow (5–7 μ) zones near the membrane in high concentration and evidently supplies the whole of the energy required for active transport of ions through the membrane.

  2. 2.

Places of synthesis of mitochondria are characterized by extintion spectra containing absorption bands of enzymes of the cytochrome c — cytochrome oxidase system and the cytochrome b5 system simultaneously.

  3. 3.

It is shown that the method of microspectrometry of living cells provides an approach to the study of kinetics of intracellular processes and can be used to test the functional state of the cell itself and of its organoids with respect to the ratio between oxidized and reduced forms of cytochrome in the terminal oxidation chain.
