Abstract

Fifteen patients were intensively evaluated before and after penile prosthesis implantation for erectile failure. Follow-up interviews up to two and a half years post-surgery focused on the effects of penile prosthesis surgery on individual psychological adjustment, marital adjustment, and sexual activity levels. In the patients with organogenic impotence, adverse sequelae were strikingly absent. In two cases of psychogenic impotence, the restoration of erectile capacity exacerbated preexisting relationship problems. The psychological outcome to penile prosthesis implantation appears to be mediated by the nature of the marital relationship.
