Abstract

While current research attempts to identify the causes and effects of Alzheimer's Disease, few studies enlighten us regarding the effects of dementia on the sexual relationship between caregivers and their spouses. Irreversible personality changes of the patient and the stressful demanding work of the caregiver lead to emotional, medical and financial burdens that exact a heavy toll on the marital relationship. The author reviews the negative interpersonal and sexual consequences of Alzheimer's disease on caregivers and their spouses and presents guidelines for addressing sexual dysfunction in the marital relationship. Interventions that may be effective in regaining or maintaining intimacy in the marriage include the health-care professional's openness to discussing sexual problems, a cognitive/behavioral problem-solving approach and the benefits of respite care.
