Conclusions

  1. 1.

XPS methods have been used to demonstrate cobalt enrichment of the Co-Ni alloy surface. The degree of enrichment can be significantly increased by oxidative treatment of the alloy.

  2. 2.

A considerable proportion of the CO adsorbed by the alloy at 250–400°C is taken up in dissociated form, while dissociation of the adsorbed NO is appreciable even at room temperature. Adsorption of CO and NO, and CO + NO mixtures, increases the surface concentration of Co, leading to the formation of surface compounds of Co and Ni of the oxide, nitride, and (possibly), carbide types.
