Summary
The phengite-bearing rocks of the Eastern Alps seem to be restricted to the Hohen Tauern and the Semmering-area. These rocks belong to the lowest-metamorphic grade of the greenschist-facies, where the phengite is a typomorphic low-temperature mineral. The formation of the phengite is favored by high water pressure and it is dependent on the chemical composition of the host-rock. The phengites are defined by the formula:
The phengites are pleochroic: nα colorless and nβ and nγ lightgreen. They have higher refractive indices and a higher birefringence than the muscovites. The phengites crystallize in the 2M1-type.
