Abstract

This article compares two baccalaureate level programs that sought to make their educational outcomes explicit within Competency-based education (CBE). Different formats were used by the two programs to accomplish the particular aims. The CBE programs in social work, the learning contracts involved, and assessment techniques are described. The differences in the two programs, one program from the University of Montana and the other from the University of Georgia, are explained and analyzed. Variety in the conceptualization and structure for CBE programs in social work is seen as an important and vital element in the programs complemented by careful description, analysis and empirical evaluation.
