Abstract
We describe plasma physics experiments using the Nova laser that investigate the temporal and spectral characteristics of directly backscattered laser light. The stimulated Raman and Brillouin instabilities are studied for a variety of plasma conditions, drive laser intensities, and beam smoothing conditions. The experimental facility, beam smoothing techniques, and some experimental results are described.

What we mean here by average intensity is that half of the light is contained in intensities below and half of the light is contained in intensities above the average intensity.

A smooth beam may lead to less profile steepening which can inhibit absolute instabilities.

We expect to make a regular interferometric measurement of the plasma density soon and hope to use Thomson scattering in the future to measure plasma waves and temperature.
Burnthrough is defined as the time when the peak plasma density is equal to the critical density for the laser, ornmax=ncrit=(πmef0/2)/e2 wherem e is the electron mass,e is the electronic charge, andfois the pump laser frequency.
