Abstract
The propagation of surface electromagnetic waves along the boundary of a layer-periodic structure and free space is studied. A peculiarity of these waves is their low phase velocity, which is on the order of 106 cm/sec. Their existence is a result of two factors: the translational symmetry of the periodic structure and the dispersion of the dielectric constant at one of the layers.
