Interference noise spectrum above a rough sea surface at small glancing angles

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics Aims and scope

Abstract

The interference noise spectrum due to sea clutter has been investigated using statistical scattering theory. The scattered field was calculated in the tangent-plane approximation. The bearings of a motionless source are taken in the bistatic case. Taking the function of shadows on a spatially inhomogeneous random surface into account, we were able to explain the nonmonotonic dependence of the width of the spectrum of arrival angle fluctuations on the distance as well as the presence of maxima in the spectrum at frequencies substantially higher than that of the maximum of a rough sea surface. The theoretical results are compared with data from a full-scale experiment.
