Propagation of a narrow radio beam in a strong surface-bounded duct

  • Published:
Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics Aims and scope

Abstract

The terrestrial surface propagation of a narrow radio beam in a surface-bounded duct has been analyzed. The vertical gradient of refractive index in this duct exceeds many times the corresponding value in the standard atmosphere. The differential and integral beam features are shown to be critically dependent on the height of the emitting aperture. The efficiency of duct layer excitation by the emitter located in the duct interior and in the underlayer is evaluated. If the emitter is directly above the duct layer, then the waveguiding mechanism is effective at distances of up to a few hundreds of diffraction lengths at wavelengths 0.03 and 0.008 m for the negative elevation angles.
