Abstract

Extended regions of alternative molecular packing have been identified in single crystals ofβ-copper phthalocyanine by transmission electron microscopy. The interface separating the regions of transformed crystal are structurally equivalent to an array of partial dislocations on alternate (001) planes of theβ-phase which can be seen to migrate under the influence of the microscopes' electron beam. The energy difference between the two planes was approximately 0.1 kJ mol−1 at room temperature, considerably smaller than the value reported to be the difference between theα andβ phases.
