Abstract
The article discusses a new type of instability of a horizontal layer of a motionless liquid, due to the motion of bubbles of gas or of particles of a suspension through the layer. It is shown that, when a certain critical mass flow rate of the gas or the suspension is attained, due to the essential inhomogeneity of the velocity of the gas bubbles, the layer becomes unstable and convective flow develops in a Bénard cell. With the motion of bubbles in the field of gravity, the criterion of instability is found to be independent of the size of the bubbles and the kinematic viscosity of the liquid.
