Abstract
A study is made of the stability of a certain class of velocity profiles in a two-dimensional channel on the basis of a new numerical algorithm for the solution of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. A profile is found which has (in a certain sense) the property of maximum stability. In form this profile is very similar to the averaged velocity profile of turbulent flow in a two-dimensional pipe.
