Mössbauer studies of relaxation effects by use of a polarized source

Abstract

The application of a magnetically split and polarized source for the study of relaxation effects in Mössbauer spectra is discussed. In the special case where the hyperfine fields in the source and the absorber are perpendicular to the γ-ray direction, the individual components of the absorber spectrum can be separated. The method is applied for the study of relaxation phenomena in Fe(ClO4)3 · 9H2O, (NH4)3FeF6, ferric alum, Fe(acac)3 and frozen aqueous solutions.
