Synopsis

Autophagic vacuoles containing mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and granules in various states of digestion have been demonstrated in the gut epithelial cells of the desert locust. The number and size of these vacuoles was found to increase with starvation. The presence of acid phosphatase activity within the autophagic vacuoles, shown by an azo dye and a lead salt method, indicates that they may be classified as autolysosomes.
