Article

Activities of lysosomal enzymes of the rat liver after administration of ethanol

Summary

Bound and free activities of the glycosaminoglycan hydrolases hyaluronidase (EC 3.2.1.35),Β-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31) andΒ-acetylglucosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.30) were measured in rat liver after administration of 1 g ethanol/kg i.p.

The following results were obtained:
  1. 1.

Protein concentration decreased significantly in the lysosomal fraction.

  2. 2.

Protein concentration remained constant in lysosomal supernatants.

  3. 3.

Activities of hyaluronidase andΒ-glucuronidase decreased significantly (p<0.05) in the lysosomal supernatants.

  4. 4.

In the lysosomal fraction activities ofΒ-glucuronidase decreased significantly, hyaluronidase activity remained constant.

  5. 5.

Electron microscopy of the parenchymal liver cells showed disturbances of the mitochondria and defects of the lysosomal membranes.
