Applicability limit of ionization methods for fast-neutron dosimetry

Measurement Techniques Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

In our article we suggest a method for computing the mean ion-formation energy in gases when the latter are ionized with neutrons of different energies.

  2. 2.

We introduce the concept of an effective ion-formation energy which accounts for the partial participation of heavy recoil nuclei in transmitting the energy from neutrons to the molecules.

  3. 3.

The numerical computations of the mean effective ion-formation energy can be used for applying the necessary corrections in evaluating the absorbed energy of neutrons in hydrogen-containing substances.

  4. 4.

The evaluation of the error due to the energy effect on the value of εeff indicates the possibility of using ionization methods of fast-neutron dosimetry in the range of low-energy neutrons.
