Use of meteoric reflection of radio waves to compare the clocks of time- and frequency-service stations

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    This method and this apparatus are being used to compare the time scales of working standards with the scale of the State Time and Frequency Standards within 0.2–0.3μsec over a comparison time of about 2 h. In the course of this experiment, ways have been found to reduce the comparison error even further.

     
  2. 2.

    Duplex retransmission of time signals through meteor channels eliminates the instrumental delays, gives useful information about the discrepancy between the time scales at the two ends of the radio link, and solves the problem of automatically correcting the indications of clocks (e.g., through the use of reversible time-interval meters).

     
  3. 3.

    Because of the high accuracy with which time scales can be compared, this method can be used to compare stations of the Time Service over distances of a few thousand kilometers through the use of intermediate automatic relay points equipped with working time standards.
