Additional information

We would like to thank Greg Carlson, Ray Jackendoff, Kees Vermeulen and anonymous reviewers for their comments. During the final revision of this article, we became aware of Kornfilt & Correa (1993), in which Jackendoff's Conceptual Structures are formalized along somewhat different lines and for other purposes. They restrict themselves to the syntactic part of the formalization, while we have also given a semantic interpretation. As the present paper was submitted in 1991 and the final revision required only marginal adaptations, we did not compare our results with theirs.
