Abstract

Intraspecific hybrids are always fertile. In interspecific crosses total or nearly total seed sterility regularly occurs in F1 or F2 individuals or even in the involved pods of P generations: Sterility barriers range from F1 failure to moderate reduction of average hybrid fertility, and are reflected by the taxonomy of the group. Diploid F1 hybrids are able to produce triploid descendants, triploid F1 plants however pentaploid to hexaploid ones. Intermediary and dominant inheritance of indument characters and new character combinations in F2 generations are observed.
