Abstract
A comparison ofLemna clones confirmesHegelmaiers distinction ofLemna perpusilla Torr. andLemna paucicostata Hegelm. Clone P 146 representsL. perpusilla Torr. Clone 6746, however, belongs toL. paucicostata Hegelm., in contrast to its previous determination. The following differential character have been found:
L. perpusilla (clone P 146): Under short-day conditions development of flowering turions and transition to dormancy. Fruit with a long style and two wing-like thickenings. Seed not released from fruit, in moist condition ivory-white above and glassy colourless below, in dry condition uniformly ivory-white, with broad barrel-like shape. Seed coat with 40 to 52 longitudinal ribs recognizable by stronger magnification only. Outer seed coat with 3–7 thin-walled subepidermal cell layers in the upper part.
L. paucicostata (clone 6746): Under short-day conditions vegetative multiplication and flower production. Fruits with a very short style. Pericarp disintegrates at seed ripeness by dissolution of middle lamellae. Seed brownish, oblong and more or less conical on the top. Seed coat with 15–22 distinct longitudinal ribs, lateral stripes also recognizable. 2–3 subepidermal cell layers in the outer seed coat; cells relatively thick-walled.
