Abstract

On the Rax-Alpe in Lower AustriaPinus mugo occurs in four local races which differ in colour and length of male flowers, and cone symmetry. On the thicker branch bases of one plant three-needled besides the ordinary two-needled fascicles were found. This phenomenon also occurs in the MediterraneanP. pinea, P. pinaster andP. halepensis, and may represent a common primitive trait.
